Report: BlackBerry Curve overtakes iPhone as most popular smartphone
Despite its early launch woes, the touchscreen BlackBerry Storm appears to be selling strongly, coming in a No. 3 on NPD’s list behind the Curve and the iPhone 3G.
After the Storm comes the ever-popular BlackBerry Pearl—which, like the Curve, is available on all four major U.S. carriers—followed by the Android-powered G1 on T-Mobile.
So, how did the Curve manage to overtake the iPhone 3G? Well, as the NPD group notes, availability on all the big carriers always helps (the iPhone is, of course, still only on AT&T), as well as its $99 (with a new two-year contract) price tag. Meanwhile, Verizon Wireless probably helped boost Curve sales with its “buy one, get one free” promotion, according to NPD.
And here’s a potentially worrying trend for Apple: the NPD found that RIM’s share of the smartphone market rose a solid 15 percent to a full 50 percent, while both Apple and Palm (which didn’t land a handset in the top 5) both saw their shares fall 10 percent.

So what is Buzz Up?
Before you start screaming Yahoo Buzz ripoff….
Chill. We got this.
Just like the truckloads of sites that have popped up around other social phenomenons (the Twitter gang comes to mind) , Buzz Up is here to promote some of the ultra cool stuff going on over at Yahoo.
You see, Yahoo has said that they are going to open up a Yahoo Buzz API very soon.
All of you non tech heads can stop shaking them. I’m going to explain.
An API is an open “connection” for coders and developers to tie into their system. Making up new pieces of complimentary software, widgets, and tools. Even building entire communities around Yahoo Buzz.
So in anticipation of this API release, we built this site. We want to be the first, the biggest, and the best Yahoo Buzz community. But the competition is going to be fierce. Because with a Goliath like Yahoo releasing a social bookmarking monster of an API, there’s going to be literally thousands of coders building with it.
But we’re pretty confident.
Because we’re not going to stop there. Our goal is also to provide a Buzz Up community for topical discussion. We have put up a forum, which we encourage you to get involved in. Today. (it’s going to be huge man, huge!) Yahoo encourages you to send out your new story submissions to friends for buzzing, so our forums are the perfect medium to get more attention to your buzz ups on any given day.
Build a network of buzzers. Buzz your story, then post it in the forums. Buzz begging is allowed there, so I’m guessing your going to want to make some friends fast.
We also want to provide a community to discuss today’s hottest buzzes. Because there are going to be plenty of them that get heated. Politics, religion, technology, and science. Get a debate going. Create a buzz…..
But back to development for a bit. Because we want you to use our forums in that regard as well.
See, we’re not wanting to be greedy here. We want to see the Buzz rock. We also want to see new Buzz related sites rock too. So if you are developing a new widget, tool, or community, feel free to discuss it here on the Buzz Up blog or in the Buzz Up forums.
